Technology has made our lives easier…. Really?!

Recently I’ve been active on Facebook and Twitter, posting random updates about me or things and technologies that basically interest me.

Well the main reason behind my sudden activity in the social media space is because of all the hype surrounding it and how basically, technology has changed the way we communicate in this 21st century.

It is interesting to see how fast technology has advanced in the last couple of years, from the development of the first mobile phone to simplify the way we communicate, to the creation of social networks to further not only simplifying the way we communicate, but also to make ‘keeping in touch with your mates’ easier.

Now, I feel the world is getting smaller. We are rapidly becoming increasingly connected and time, space as well as distance are quickly becoming irrelevant or have little, or no value.

Why? Well, picture this.

Now we can stay in touch with our loved ones from overseas. No longer we have to wait for the snail mail which take yonks even to arrive. Now, thank goodness with e-mail, it can be sent within seconds and soon the receiving end will receive the same second the notification pops up in your browser saying the message was sent.

Not only with e-mail, we can skype, chat on msn or simply call whereever we are, whenever we want to. Convenient? Yes!

So do you see when I said time, space and distance are increasingly becoming irrelevant? CONVENIENCE is the word.

In a nutshell, with social media and other forms of technologies predominantly in web in this case, have made our lives far more convenient than the previous generations, now the big (and thought provoking) question is:

“Has convenience actually made your life easier?!”

Have you ever thought that with convenience or ease in communication, actually comes in with a bigger responsibility? Here are a few examples:

1) You checked your phone - there was one misscalled. You felt you had more urgent and pressing matters to do, so you didn’t make a call until ‘your urgent matters’ were finished. You called them back, they were not happy. They thought it was too late to call someone back after a few hours have passed.

2) You texted someone. The reply came back after a few hours later saying they had no credit before. You were a bit upset because you’ve been waiting for their reply that you thought was pretty important.

Do the above scenarios sound familiar to you? Do you see the same element happening between these two events?

With convenience in communication, comes in the urgency to respond back.

Now, do you think your life has been made easier with social media and web developments, or do you actually you find yourself tangled in a world of ‘urgency’ that nags you to respond back?
